Propane Tank Recertification

Keep your propane cylinders safe, legal, and ready for refill with Transport Canada–approved recertification.

Why Recertification Matters

Propane tanks operate under pressure, and over time their safety components can wear, corrosion can develop, and unseen defects can form.

Recertification confirms your cylinder:

  • Meets federal safety standards
  • Has been properly inspected by a trained professional
  • Can safely be refilled and used again

Without a valid recertification, it’s illegal to refill a tank in Canada – and unsafe for you and those around you.

What We Recertify

We recertify a wide range of propane cylinders and tanks, including:

How to Tell if Your Tank Needs Recertification

Every propane tank has a certification date stamped into the collar or metal ring near the valve.

  • The date is shown as month and year (for example: 06 14).
  • Propane tanks in Canada must be recertified 10 years from that original certification date.
  • After recertification, a new date is added to indicate the next inspection period.

If your tank is 10 years old or more, it must be recertified before it can be legally refilled.

If your tank is close to expiry, it’s best to recertify before you need a refill.

Who Does the Recertification?

New West Equipment is a Transport Canada-approved facility, which means we’re registered and qualified to inspect and recertify your tanks to meet federal standards.

All inspections are completed by trained technicians with the appropriate certifications to ensure compliance and safety.

We make recertification easy

If a tank does not meet recertification requirements, we can help you explore replacement options.

  1. Check your tank’s certification date. If it’s expired or nearing expiry, give us a call before bringing it in.
  2. Drop off at our yard. Tanks are dropped off at our facility during yard hours (7:30 AM – 4:30 PM). Our customer service team will handle intake and paperwork.
  3. Inspection & recertification. Tanks are inspected and recertified based on condition and eligibility. Recertification usually takes about three days, though during busy seasons it can take up to a week. Our team works to complete the process as quickly as possible while ensuring all inspections and safety checks are thorough.
  4. Optional fill. If you’d like your tank filled after recertification, let us know at drop-off.
  5. Pick up. Once complete, your tank is ready for pickup.
